Brief Description of the Organization:
People Organizing to Demand Environmental & Economic Rights (PODER) is a ten
year old grassroots, environmental justice organization based in the San
Francisco's Mission District.  PODER believes that the solutions to
community problems depend on the active participation of all people in
decision-making processes.  Improvements to our neighborhood, and for
disenfranchised communities in general, must be made through collective
social action to bring about social, economic and environmental justice.

Job Summary:
PODER is looking for a Youth Program Coordinator for the Common Roots: Youth
Organizer Program.  The Common Roots Program is a joint effort between PODER
and the Chinese Progressive Association (CPA), a grassroots community-based
organization in Chinatown.  This effort is geared towards the development of
low-income immigrant youth of Chinese and Latino descent in San Francisco's
Chinatown and Mission District to become youth organizers.  The Common Roots
Program will consist of three 10 week terms starting in the Summer, going
through the Fall, and finishing in the Spring with an intensive evaluation
and planning period.  Common Roots youth are 17 to 22 in age, and
participate in educational workshops, leadership and organizing skills
training's, and are provided with one-on-one mentorship.

Specific Duties include, but are not limited to:
  o Develop and implement detailed program plan;
  o Develop outreach materials (i.e., flyers, brochure, promotional
materials, etc.);
  o Recruit, hire and supervise youth for the program;
  o Organize joint meetings between PODER and CPA;
  o Coordinate political education workshops, including travel, facilitation,
materials, etc.
o Coordinate skills training's (including organizing skills, grassroots
fundraising, and membership recruitment);
o Assist with coordination of overall PODER program work.

Minimum Qualifications include:
  o Experience and knowledge of youth program planning, implementation and
  o Experience supervising youth and mentoring young adults;
  o Excellent interpersonal skills;
  o Excellent written and oral communications skills;
  o Excellent organizational and administrative skills;
  o Familiarity with basic office equipment;
  o Proficient in Spanish (speak, read, write);
  o Willingness to work collaboratively with other staff, Board, and
community members;
  o Agreement with PODER's mission and to economic and environmental justice.

Women and people of color are strongly encouraged to apply.  Starting salary
is $24,000 ‹ $26,000 depending on experience.  Generous health benefits
included.  PODER is a project of the Tides Center.
