Activist / Community Organizer

As national cutbacks in Medicare strip the safety net and tens of
thousands of working families in NJ are without insurance, ACORN- the
Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now - is organizing to
push the richest state in the country to address the crisis. We do it
the only way that works: organizing working class communities to have a
voice in the debate.

The role of the Activist Organizer is to build organization in low and
moderate-income communities around health care and other issues. House
by house, family by family, organizers hear from community residents
about their health care issues and the solutions they would propose.
They work with community residents to hold meetings, do research on key
issues, and develop campaign strategies to get these issues addressed.
The ACORN Activist Organizer's job is to work for the membership of
ACORN, helping them build the power they need to win on the issues that
are most important to them and their communities.

ACORN is the nation's largest grassroots social justice organization,
with more than a quarter million members throughout the country, as well
as Canada, Mexico, and Peru. Together, ACORN staff and members fight for
affordable housing, living wages, and civil rights. Through lobbying,
protests, meetings, and actions, ACORN has won countless campaigns on
behalf of low and moderate-income families.

ACORN provides an ideal work setting for those committed to fighting for
civil rights issues and interested in working in a fast-paced, exciting

Canvass Director

The goal of the ACORN canvass is to SHIFT THE BALANCE OF POWER in New
Jersey: we build support for progressive causes like minimum wage
increases, affordable health care, and immigrant rights in working-class
suburban neighborhoods in key legislative districts. It is more an issue
canvass than a fundraising canvass, though we do ask for financial
commitments. The canvass director will build a staff of part-time
canvassers, develop a canvassing program, oversee the budget, and manage
the canvass day to day. He or she will also work closely with the ACORN
organizing staff to engage the members from the canvass in volunteering
their time to participate in legislative issue campaigns, and to make
sure the canvass is supporting legislative campaigns through, for
example, generating mail or calls to legislators in targeted districts
or inviting people to an ACORN-sponsored town hall meeting with key
elected officials. During election season, the canvass converts into a
Get Out the Vote operation. The Canvass Director manages this program.
