*PUBLIC ADVOCATE RUN-OFF ELECTION OCT 1*

Since none of the democratic Public Advocate candidates collected 40% of
the
vote, there will be a special run off tomorrow to decide the winner between
Councilmemeber Letitia "Tish" James and NYS Senator Daniel Squadron.

Since there is no republican candidate, this primary only effects voters
enrolled in the Democratic Party. Polls will be open from 6am to 9pm.
You can
find your polling location at nyc.pollsitelocator.com
<http://met.server278.com/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=22932&qid=72531>
or
by calling 866-VOTE-NYC or 212-868-3692.

Both Squadron and James attended the last Real Rent Reform
<http://met.server278.com/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=22933&qid=72531>
meeting
and spoke about the 421-A tax break scandal.

And if you can hear more about the election tonight if you tune into

tonight at 8pm. Our host, Scott Sommer, will also talk about the new
heat law,
new rent guidelines, and the potential government shutdown.

*MORELAND COMMISSION VS. REAL ESTATE*

The Moreland Commission - a panel of convened to investigate public
corruption -
had a hearing last week Albany and received testimony from Jaron
Benjamin, Met
Council's director, and board member Michael McKee. In the aftermath of
the Met
Council report (found HERE
<http://met.server278.com/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=22934&qid=72531>),
all
five developers involved in the 421A scandal have been subpoenaed by the
Moreland Commission.

But according to Ken Lovett at the Daily News, Governor Cuomo is working to
steer the Moreland Commission away from investigating REBNY
<http://met.server278.com/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=22935&qid=72531>.

It's clear that Governor Cuomo is uncomfortable with the investigation
focusing
on his relationship with real estate. That makes the next New York City
Moreland
Commission hearing even more important - the hearing will take place on
October
29, 6pm at Lighthouse International (111 E 59th Street, Manhattan).

We need tenants to mobilize, testify, and raise visibility on the issue. If

*MET COUNCIL'S HOMERULE CAMPAIGN*

As stated last week, Met Council is planning to work with tenant
associations, community groups, and service providers from around the
city to
launch a campaign to repeal the Urstadt Law and regain home rule of the
rent
laws. If you or your organization are interested in attending an initial
planning meeting, contact us at organizing at metcouncilonhousing.org
<mailto:organizing at metcouncilonhousing.org>.
