*TENANTS PROTEST AT MORELAND HEARING*

Met Council and allies from the Real Rent Reform
<http://met.server278.com/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=22990&qid=96839>

campaign held a silent protest at the latest Moreland Commission hearing
last
night, pressuring the panel to subpoena REBNY and close the LLC loophole
that
allows realtors to spend nearly unlimited funds on elections.

The hearing date, time, and location changed: it moved from Tuesday, 6pm
near
61st St and Lexington Ave to Monday, 5pm near 35th St and 11th Ave -a
mile from
the nearest train station. But this didn't stop tenants, who were joined by
members of Occupy and Citizen Action in a silent protest, who stood and
covered their mouths with dollar bills
<http://met.server278.com/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=22991&qid=96839>.
Special
thanks to PACC, UHAB, Northwest Bronx, Flatbush Tenants Coalition, Three
Parks,
and the Bronx Park East Community Association.

The Moreland Commission - tasked with investigating public corruption -
will
deliver a report and recommendations on December 1. Tenants have a huge
stake in
this; limiting the amount of money that big real estate can give will
make it
easier for us to win stronger rent laws in 2015. To get/stay involved

effort, click HERE

*HOME RULE CAMPAIGN MEETING, NOV 16*

Next month, Met Council is hosting the first Home Rule Campaign meeting for
2014. Some mayoral and City Council candidates have committed to going
to Albany
to fight for the return of home rule of rent laws to City Hall.

We are inviting tenant associations, community groups, and service
providers
from around the city to launch a campaign to repeal the Urstadt Law. If
you or
your organization are interested in the meeting, contact us at
organizing at metcouncilonhousing.org

*MET COUNCIL PENS NY DAILY NEWS OPED*

In Sunday's edition of the NY Daily News, Met Council on Housing's
executive
director Jaron Benjamin linked the lack of affordable housing to the
unchecked
campaign contributions from the landlord lobby. You can read the article
HERE
<http://met.server278.com/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=22995&qid=96839>.

"One of the major causes of the shortage is the way the real estate
industry
uses its massive campaign contributions to limit our affordable housing
stock,"
said Benjamin in the article. The opinion piece, much like the earlier
NY Times article
<http://met.server278.com/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=22996&qid=96839>,
demonstrates
the link between homelessness and the destruction of rent regulation to
a wide
audience.
